The Willy Street Co-op, designated "Best Place to Work" in 2012 by Madison Magazine, is a natural foods cooperative with locations in both Madison and Middleton.  We are looking for an Assistant Store Manager for our east side Willy Street store.  The Assistant Store Manager assists the Store Manager in all areas of the store's operation and oversees personnel as well as provides effective back- up to the Store Manager by assuming responsibility in his absence. Excellent communication and customer service skills, as well as training and supervising experience is required. Experience working in a retail grocery store preferred, knowledge of co-ops and natural, organic, whole foods a big plus. Purpose

The Assistant Store Manager's primary focus is the store's operational excellence. The Assistant Store Manager (ASM) acts with the operational authority of the Store Manager and is prepared to independently fulfill any duty or responsibility of the Store Manager.

The Assistant Store Manager works as assigned by the Store Manager and by liaising with other managers and teams as appropriate to:

  • Maintain a happy and engaged workforce
  • ensure prompt and friendly service of the store's customers
  • ensure the appearance and presentation of the site meets Co-op standards at all times
  • set and achieve the store's goals
  • design and enforce operational systems and policies
 

Status

Salaried, exempt position, 40 hours per week

 

Essential Functions

Act on behalf of the Store Manager when assigned or when the Store Manager is unreachable.

 

1. Customer Service

Customer service is WSGC’s primary focus in providing food, goods, and services to its customers. It is the goal of the staff that all customers are treated in a respectful and courteous manner, paying close attention to their individual needs. This personal care and attention should be directed to all customers to ensure that shopping at the WSGC is as comfortable and satisfying an experience as possible. The ASM is not only responsible for providing excellent customer service herself, but also for training and assisting store managers and staff in their customer service skills.

  • Ensure a high standard of customer service store-wide.
  • Ensure employees treat customers in a friendly and helpful manner.
  • Ensure employees assist customers fully and answer their questions, needs, and requests.
  • Resolve customer complaints in a fair and tactful manner.
  • Encourage and answer all customer suggestions, requests and complaints as assigned.
 

2. Store Oversight

In conjunction with the Store Manager, guarantee the consistent operational excellence of the Store

  • Take responsibility for the continuous improvement of the systems that guarantee the operational excellence of the store.
  • Fill MoD and Rounder shifts as necessary and other key supervisory shifts as scheduled by the Store Manager
  • Fill in for absenteeism among MoDs, Rounders, and, in the absence of key departmental management, any key supervisory staff.

Work with the Store Management Team to:

  • Ensure a strong management presence in store at all times
  • Enforce store policies and procedures in a firm and fair manner.
  • Communicate with staff individually as needed on improvements in customer service, product appearance, and other operational matters.
  • Track, analyze and report performance of individual departments as assigned by the Store Manager
 

3. Personnel

Having a well-trained and effective staff is essential to the smooth functioning of the Store. The Assistant Store Manager, in concert with the Store Manager, is responsible for hiring, training, educating, motivating, and generally overseeing the MoDs and Rounders. The Assistant Store Manager also collaborates with the Store Manager on the oversight of the store's department managers.

  • Be accessible to employees and participate in building a positive morale among store staff.
  • Hire, schedule, train, supervise, discipline and evaluate MoD's and Rounders.
  • Assist in the training and evaluation of the Store's department managers
  • Recommend approval or refinement of staff evaluations that have been presented to the store manager for approval as assigned by the Store Manager
  • Monitor the training of, contribute to the reviews of, and recommend discipline for store staff.
  • Suggest areas for their own and other staff members professional development as needed.

Work with the Store Management Team to:

  • Foster a culture of appreciation in which staff understand the value of their everyday efforts in the Co-op's success.
  • Provide a work environment which encourages employees’ engagement in problem-solving, policy development, and the store's overall excellence.
  • Ensure that performance standards are met by all staff.
 

4. Project Management

Continuous improvement to our operational systems often requires focus and attention on unique projects. The assistant store manager, at the direction of the store manager, may be assigned to oversee various store improvement efforts and to ensure they are completed with healthy process and in a timely manner.

  • Determine which personnel are necessary for the execution of assigned projects
  • Coordinate the involvement of appropriate stakeholders in assigned projects
  • Report the progress of the project regularly
  • Track and review results of assigned projects
 

5. Other

  • Work with the store management team to ensure store is adhering to Co-op standards
  • Stay abreast of current industry trends.
  • Take on other duties as assigned by the Store Manager.
  • Answer phones as necessary.
  • Orient and be helpful to new employees.
  • Set a positive example for co-workers.
 

Qualifications

  • Two or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year of experience training and supervising staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong customer orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills.

  • Ability to analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics.
